Your Accent Betrays You…

I remembered this morning a scene a friend of mine told me about. After a few years in England she returned to her country in Africa to reside for a season. Some day a young girl walked up to her and asked “you are not from here are you?” My friend was surprised and asked why she said this. She responded saying “well, your outfit’s different, your accent is different and you say please and thank you.” LoL.

It’s amazing how much you can pick up from observing a person. Just by our accent you could almost tell which country one grew up or live, what part of that country, and sometimes the sort of people we hang out with. I wonder how much people glean from watching me. After an observation of my life, if someone said to me “you are not from here are you?” I’d like their response to my “why do you say that?” be: “well, you are patient and compassionate, hard-working, gentle, joyful, peaceful, kind, disciplined and you show love.”

I pondered on these things today as I have been thinking lately of how much of Today’s Christianity is based on fame, church attendance and or activities, titles and ordinations, etc and so less on the Character of the people. Let’s not forget the most important thing: “In Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, what counts is a new creation” (Gal 6:15).
